Are you supposed to be able to turn so smoothly you're back you completely turn
around just with the pivot? I can't do that and am wondering how one can.

uncertain whether or not I'm expected to make a complete turn-around.

Are you talking about turning through 180 degrees, if so you just pivot on
your toes until your facing in the opposite direction.
